As an Alaskan artist, I try to make a trip to Denali National Park once a year. Sept of 2020 was a spectacular year. The mountain was completely visible and the wildlife was abundant. These two caribou stood right in the road in front of us. Traveling with non-artist friends I had to rely on photos so this is a combination of 2 photos. I loosely sketched first for placement and then blocked in keeping with a limited palette. After the block in I layered various other colors and values to create visual energy and interest while still portraying the majestic moment.
