This piece was done plein air among the overwhelming drama of Sedona's Red Rock Cathedrals. I painted several different pieces there over the course of several days but this is the piece in which I allowed myself to simply interpret what I was seeing rather than making an attempt to 'get it just right'. I began with a charcoal sketch, followed by an alcohol underpainting. In the end it felt like I'd captured the Spirit of place there. It was as if time was suspended for a moment and my instincts kicked in. For me, this represents the promise of going again, of getting to know these places better and better on each occasion and immersing myself in this unique place and learning through the mode of painting and drawing who these places really are. That process is what teaches me to really listen to the place itself.
