I try to lose my reference photo as quickly as possible, then while developing the focus allow the painting to guide me into a story. I love canyons , rocks and of course horses. Horses instinctively try to avoid tight places and escaping a canyon fit with the power and intense expression of the horse. I used a variety of pastel types to include pastel pencils on an inked sanded ground.
