This painting was painted with hard and soft pastels as well as pencil pastels. The inspiration came from the SE corner of our property where there is a small maple tree that shines in the fall amidst oak and birch trees. The story is the maple tree clothed in shades of crimson as well as the light and shadow. I started with a value sketch and then moved on to draw the large shapes. I used pastels and denatured alcohol for my underpainting and then went on to paint with a variety of pastel brands.
