I painted this painting because I had been staying in Florence OR and on this particular day, the sky was sunny and clear, the tide was high, the sea was raging and there were so many colors in the ocean! The sounds, smells, the breeze...all contributed! I had not painted the ocean much at all, so I challenged myself to capture this. I wanted to recreate the colors and the movement of the water and spray up against the rocks on the jetty. I really took my time, with the b&w and color studies, choosing my palette. My underpainting was warm pastels with an alcohol wash. I really focused on the colors in the water, especially the close up spray. I used the blues and reds in the water for much of the rocks and shadows.
