This painting is from a field in Reedville, VA in the spring. There were beautiful, expansive fields of bright lemon yellow flowers. I tried to keep this painting as simple as possible, the yellow of these flowers can be overwhelming, so I kept their brilliance to a few spots. I wanted to include the big tree and bush, I loved the shadows contrasting the yellow in the field. This is on PastelMat paper, which I think really affords a soft look, making the painting feel peaceful. I created a b&w study, with different formats before deciding on this one, and also a few color studies. I was very careful to keep my strokes simple, really wanted to not overwork it.
